Word Of the Head Department of General Nursing
General Nursing Specialization comprises two (2) levels of education program. The first level comprises the general education component and some professional courses of the baccalaureate degree leading to the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN). It offers a strong foundation as students thread through their educational endeavor in the nursing profession. At this level, students will develop and be equipped with adequate competence to function as a science-oriented professional as they progress to the next level of their nursing career specializing in General Nursing.
This specialization includes the care of a variety of patients who have general medical or surgical needs. In many ways, general nursing is the backbone of the nursing profession. This type of nursing allows student nurses to learn in a dynamic environment which focuses on many diseases and interventions. General Nursing focuses on the care of patients with medical and surgical conditions.
It provides opportunities for students to gain competence in providing general as well as complex care for patients from the acutely unwell, to those needing rehabilitative assistance with extended care in hospital, long term facilities, clinics and community settings. This specialization of nursing allows student nurses to assume the roles of direct care giver, teacher, counsellor, advocate, coordinator of care and member of nursing profession.

Objectives
Student Nurses are expected to be well-rounded in general nursing and can work in acute, rehabilitative and community environments. This specialization also focuses on the care of patients with mental health problems, palliative care of patients with terminal illness, and care of the elderly patients.
