Word Of the Head Department of Operative Surgery
Surgery and Operating Theater Nursing Science Specialization comprises two (2) levels of education program. The first level covers the general education component and some professional courses of the baccalaureate degree leading to the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN). It offers a strong foundation as the student threads through their educational endeavor in the nursing profession. At this level, the student will develop and be equipped with adequate competencies to function as a science-oriented professional as they progress to the next level of their nursing career as student specializing in Surgery and Operating Theater Nursing Science.
Surgery and Operating Theater Nursing Science focuses on the student opportunities to be exposed to the various levels of health care with several client groups in different settings in the Out-patient department, Surgery Department, Operating Theater & Emergency Department specifically in the Trauma Department. These opportunities shall be given in graduated experiences to ensure that the competencies per course, per level and for the whole program are developed.

Objectives
Before graduation, the student shall approximate the competencies of a professional Perioperative nurse or an Operating Theatre Nurse as they assume the various roles and responsibilities. The peri-operative role of the nurse working independently, participates in a team, be well organized, develop good working habits and show initiative in meeting the needs of client. The standards of clinical practice that a professional Operating Theater Nurses follow which the are designed to provide an optimal level of care that ensures the client’s safety and comfort. In addition, the Operating Theater Nurse exercises judgment, critical thinking, and interpersonal communication skills in applying the nursing process to ensure clients receive appropriate nursing care during the peri-operative experience.
